Dad's Day

 Permanent link

It’s that time again when we happen upon the annual day of the year to celebrate Fathers. I am lucky enough to not only have a great husband who is an outstanding father to our three children, but also have my father still living and very close by. It is challenging to come up with the right Dad's Day gift each year for both of them as I am not one who is into nonsense buying – there has to be a reason and a purpose behind the gift.

I believe one of the truest honors you can pay anyone is to listen and observe when spending time together, filing important tidbits of information in your memory bank, and then drawing upon them for future use – especially in the category of gift giving. Listening to their likes, desires, wants, hints and stories about their hobbies are perfect items for “storage.” Being crafty, I find this extremely helpful considering the fact that if time allows, I would much rather pass my creative talents on through a gift than purchase something from the store.

My father has been playing golf since he was five years old… needless to say, 66 years later he still has a passion for the game and tries to hit the links at least three times a week. Over the years I have created many gifts for him with the theme of golf. This year I decorated a glass jar that he can use to “stash his cash,” and go out for a round of golf when he has collected enough money. The initial gift includes golf balls and tees for him to use immediately.

As for my husband, he loves 80’s music! We are constantly tuning phrases from daily conversations into songs from the 80’s! In addition to what my kids picked out for him, I made a CD of 80’s rock music for him and created the artwork for the case. Although it’s not a big dollar item, I know he will love it and it will be something special to him because I took the time to listen and draw from my memory bank to put meaning into the gift. I also made him a card with a tool theme since he is in the Tool and Die business and loves all kinds of tools.

As the old saying goes, it’s not how much you spend, it’s the thought that counts!  Celebrate the men in your life this Dad's Day with a personalized card or gift.
