Hi everyone!  Hope your 2011 has already gotten off to a good start!  I've spent the day catching up on a few things and getting ready to celebrate my granddaughter's 2nd birthday.  She was born on New Year's Eve...so our partying is probably a little different than most!

If you haven't participated in a challenge in the past, why not hop aboard this one?  Our challenge for the month of January will be "All About Scallops".  Upload your entries to the gallery and then add a link on this forum for a chance to win a fabulous prize package from EK Success Brands!!!!

There are sooo many ways to use scallops in your scrapbooking, cardmaking and in altered art and home decor pieces.  Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

I'll get something posted here by the first of the week with a couple of examples to get your mojo started so start thinking now about what you might like to do!!!

Hope you will all join in on the fun!  This one should be easy for everyone!!!!

I'm back from the birthday party and here's a layout from Adalyn's actual birthday on Friday.  We had a fun day celebrating at the MALL...that is where this little two year old gal wanted to go!

http://http://www.spottedcanary.com/Birthday_Girl(2).htm

I used the EK Diamond Lace edge punch on this layout and it is one of my very favorites.  I especially like layering several of them together!  Here is a link to the punch so you can see it up close and personal:

http://http://www.eksuccessbrands.com/ektools/keyword_search_results.htm?query=EKPL8031&type=&brand=EK+Tools

Now that we've got the ball rolling, let's see some of your favorite scallops used on a project.  Be sure to upload your project to our gallery and then link it here to be eligible for the big prize package!!!!

Yay!  It worked that time!  Just a note of what I did wrong in case it helps someone else...

I had http:// TWO TIMES on my addy...It automatically shows up in the box so make sure you highlight that only one time when you copy the address to post your link.

Oh, I have to get busy on scallops. I love them, and love to emphasize them like you did with triple (was it triple, or more?) edge. What a great idea, just in time for Valentines, too! Can't wait! Thank you!

Loving the many new products on the market today, after starting stamping in the '90s! Love to review other artist's pieces that inspire me. I love CD covers, photography, and the local arboretum for ideas. Of course, adding my warped sense of humor to all projects allows me to share myself with others!

Robin & Vic,

Glad you're going to play along!  Can't wait to see your creations!

Come on out and play on this one, everyone!

Robin,  I see you're an SDU instructor.  I used to teach SDU all the time at our local scrapbook store before the store closed.  Loved teaching it and getting to know all of the students.  How is it going for you?

Becky, the SDU classes are going ok.  I teach at my local Michael's & registrations has been pretty low.  I am hoping that with the new year here, I'll have more interested.  I am starting up a class again next Monday!

Robin,  SDU was always slow for us around the holidays too.  We usually had good turnouts right after the first of the year though.  People are ready to get organized...and that many times includes their photos!

I have added three simple notecards to the gallery using the ribbon slot punch...which has a small scalloped edge.  I LOVE this punch.  It's a new one and I think you are going to love it too!

Here's a link to the punch:

http://www.eksuccessbrands.com/ektools/Products/3+8_Ribbon_Slot_Edger_Punch_54-40096.htm

Now...on to the cards.  You can make these simple cards in a matter of minutes.  I made a bunch and left the sentiment off and will just stamp something on as the need arises.  I've uploaded 3 samples for you to see.

Card #3 was using 3/8 inch ribbon through the slots that the punch makes.  HINT:  Wrap a piece of tape around the end of your ribbon and then cut the end at an angle.  Then it will be easy to weave your ribbon through the slots.

http://www.spottedcanary.com/Notecard_3.htm

Card #2 was made pretty much the same except I weaved a strip of cardstock through the slots instead of ribbon.  Be sure to run the strip back and forth between your fingers a few times to make it more pliable.

http://www.spottedcanary.com/Notecard_2.htm

Card #1 also uses cardstock instead of ribbon...but on this one I used 2 smaller cardstock strips in coordinating colors and weaved them through opposite slots for more of a weaved look.

http://www.spottedcanary.com/Notecard_1.htm

I'm going to make some that are black, cream and turquoise for my nephew's fiance to use for thank you cards after I get back from vacation.

Speaking of vacation...We leave EARLY Saturday morning, but I'll be checking in on my inlaw's laptop so hope to see some of YOUR creations!

 Jiuliantitus,

Your link to the gallery didn't work.  Catherine wrote some great instructions to help everyone with linking their projects.  Hope these help!  I looked at your project and it is gorgeous!  Please try again linking in on here so you can be entered in the contest!  Let me know if you have trouble...I'm on vacation in Florida, but checking in every day and will be glad to help!  Becky

Here are Catherine's directions:

First, begin by uploading your creation to the Creative Gallery.

Then, follow the link to the project you just posted (it gives you that option after submitting the project) and highlight and copy the whole address as it appears in the Address Bar.

Maneuver back here, to the Year in the Life Challenge Thread and click on the Add Reply text at  the bottom of the thread.

The Add Reply window will open and on the top banner you'll see a globe with a chain link graphic - when you hover over it the words "Hyperlink Manager" appear - click on that.

When the window opens, paste the link that you copied from the project you posted in the Creative Gallery in the first section, the box where you post this is called URL:.

Type the name of your project in the Link Text box, and for the last step; in the Target section choose New  Window from the Drop Down menu. This will let people see your project in a new window without taking them away from the Year in the Life Challenge thread.

Finally, click Okay at the bottom of the window and the link to your project will appear normal in your post, but when you actually post it, it'll be an active link for readers to click on.

Bemybee,

Welcome to the flock and good luck in this challenge!  Love how you used the negative space from the scalloped circle for your card.  Great job!

I guess becoming a grandmother recently has made me like all things that are "babyish", but I have always liked quilts and scallops. Though the punch I used does not have the word "scallop" in it (Abstract Flower), I think it does have a scalloped look.

Now if only a company would come up with an embossing folder that gives the look of quilting!....until then I guess I will keep using my gutter guard for a quilted look. It is a good example of ways to use things around the house in your crafting projects, though!

Another tip is to use sticker label paper for adhering small pieces of paper such as this quilting method. Much easier than using glue!

Hope everyone is staying warm....maybe under a quilt! Still icy here in Atlanta.

Holly...Your card is soooo pretty!

What is a "gutter guard"?  Not sure I've heard of that before...

I included a piece of gutter guard in my second photo. It is the mesh that they put over your gutters to keep the leaves out. This variety is plastic and comes in a roll. You purchase it at DIY Home stores or I see it often at thrift stores.

There are a lot of textures you can achieve using household items. It would make me happy if a company came out with an embossing folder that gave the look of quilting.

Thanks, Becky!

Only SIX more days to get in on this challenge and a chance to win an awesome prize package!

CHA (Craft & Hobby Association's show for retailers...this is when they buy all the great new stuff!) begins this weekend and there will be lots of awesome new products so let's all get busy and use up some of the old stash and create something with SCALLOPS!  You know you want to!

Here's a couple of quick tips in case you don't have a scalloped punch...

1.  Circles cut in half can be used around the edge of a shape to create a nice scalloped edge!

2.  Circles folded in half over a piece of string make a nice scalloped banner!  Banners are very "in" right now.

3.  A Corner Adorner rounder punch can be used to make a scalloped edge if you take the guard off!

Anyone else have any great tips for creative ways to make scallops??

Becky, here's my Caged Bouquet card. I created a curved birdcage on a card with scalloped borders. Used K&Co Life Journey papers on the cage and for the background flowers. Also K&Co English Floral Frames & Stickers.

I tried loading  it on my gallery but kept getting 'an error has occured'  message.

More details  here : http://angsandy.blogspot.com/2011/01/caged-bouquet.html

Woodenwhimsey, I couldn't get your link to work.  I've reposted the directions that Catherine wrote up on how to link your project to the gallery.  Hope that helps!  In the meantime, I've linked your project to this message to make sure you are entered in the contest...but you should try again so you can be sure you know how to do it.

First, begin by uploading your creation to the Creative Gallery.

Then, follow the link to the project you just posted (it gives you that option after submitting the project) and highlight and copy the whole address as it appears in the Address Bar.

Maneuver back here and click on the Add Reply text at  the bottom of the thread.

This will let people see your project in a new window without taking them away from the Challenge thread.

Finally, click Okay at the bottom of the window and the link to your project will appear normal in your post, but when you actually post it, it'll be an active link for readers to click on.

Queenie Jeanie and Kimberlump,

Your links didn't work for your projects.  Be sure you use the hyperlink button above before copying the address.  The hyperlink button is the one with the globe and a chain in the tool bar above.  Once you click on that, you can copy and paste the link for your project...the http:// part is already in the box so make sure you don't have it copied twice!  I have done that before and the link won't work.  Then just type the name of your project in the Link Text Box and it will come up on here with just the name of your project.  I linked both of your projects below.  If you see more than just the name of your project...your link probably didn't work.  You can click on it to see and it should take you right to your project in the gallery.  Hope this helps for next time.  I know it can be confusing.

All About Scallops Challenge

Things I Love Valentine

Now, that being said, GREAT CARDS, LADIES!  Thanks so much for participating in the challenge and good luck to both of you!

Anyone else want to get in on the challenge during these last few hours?

We're getting lots and lots of snow here...school will probably be cancelled for the next couple of days...sounds like a good excuse to stay in and play with paper, don't you think??!!  Stay warm for those of you in the path of this winter storm!

Should clarify that the hyperlink button will show up in the toolbar ONLY after you hit reply.  So don't look for it up there at the top of this post!  Copy and paste your project addy, then come back to this forum, hit reply and go from there....Now it's clear as mud, right?
