This lovely hand felted heart makes a beautiful Valentines gift for a daughter, mother, or best friend. This pendent be worn on a ribbon, chain or made into a pin. The felted heart is made from 100% wool with metal and crystal embellishments.
Instructions
STEP
1:
To make felt for heart, lay a 3” piece of roving on the felting block horizontally. Place two 2” pieces of roving on top of the 3” roving; place these side by side vertically. Top the roving layers with a second piece of 3” roving lying horizontally. Creating crisscrossed layers of roving is the foundation for the felt that will be made.
STEP
2:
Begin needle felting the roving. Poke the felting needle up and down into the roving and through the foam. It is important to understand it not the speed or pressure that make good felt, but felting the entire piece of stacked roving several times.
STEP
3:
When the entire stack of roving has been needled felted, flip over and repeat on the other side.
STEP
4:
When roving is completely felted it will look like a piece of felt. Fold the newly made felt in half and cut into a heart shape.
STEP
5:
To give dimension to the felt heart, place heart on foam block. Cut a new piece of roving 2” long. Pull roving fibers apart creating thinner strands. Roll thin strand of roving into loose circles and place on heart. Needle felt circles to the heart to give dimension. Repeat this step till heart is about 1/8” thick. Lightly poke the felting needle around heart’s edges to give a finished look. Back of heart will remain flat.
STEP
6:
Make a small tassel from the gold thread by cutting 2” pieces of thread then knotting at top. Cut off all excess thread.
STEP
7:
Glue heart to brass pendent. There will be two brass pieces; the larger piece will be glued to the top of the heart and the smaller triangle piece to the bottom, as shown. Do not over glue.
STEP
8:
Glue crystals and tassel to the front of the heart. Again, do not over glue. Only a small amount is needed.
STEP
9:
Let dry completely. Add ribbon, chain, or pin back as desired.
